Specialized staff from the ADELI Medical Center assessed the motor skills of children aged 3 months to 3 years. (Individual consultations are still possible at the diagnostic center of the ADELI Medical Center at Hlboká 45 in Piešťany. Appointments can be made by email at info@babymed.sk or by phone at +421 907 974 088.)
The children went through a so-called baby course in which they moved actively in a relaxed atmosphere. The specialists observed their movement patterns in various positions and assessed their motor development.
PhDr. Jana Stanová, Head of the Medical Department of the ADELI Medical Center, and her team point out the importance of early recognition of warning signals for the immaturity of the central nervous system:
Dr. Stanová: "Even though it may seem as if a baby only lies down in the first trimester and sits down sometime around six months, there is of course much more to motor development. We recommend that parents familiarize themselves with the milestones of development, because not every child's development proceeds correctly and physiologically.
If the doctor detects persistent newborn reflexes in the first year of life (grasping reflex, screcj reflex, etc.) or if the child shows conspicuously high or low muscle tension, this may indicate immaturity of the nervous system. In such cases, it is crucial for parents to seek professional help at an early stage and start the appropriate therapy!"
If a child needs a review of their development, it is strongly recommended to consult specialists. It is also advisable to get a second opinion from another institution, as experience with rare genetic diseases is also "rare".
"Special attention is required if a child was born prematurely, had a low Apgar score, had complications at birth or the parents noticed abnormal symptoms without an identifiable cause," Dr. Stanová reminds us of the most important reasons for a consultation with specialists in pediatric neurology and physiotherapy.
"A child's brain works like a sponge in the early stages and can also learn what doesn't happen automatically," argues Prof. Dr. Heinrich Binder, medical advisor to ADELI, explaining why parents should not hesitate with possible therapies. "The first two years of life are crucial for the development of walking and motor skills. If nothing is done, a pathological movement pattern can develop that is difficult to reverse," emphasizes Prof. Binder.
Unfortunately, problems in the motor development of infants are often downplayed in practice. "Especially in view of the high workload of pediatricians and pediatric neurologists, we would like to encourage our colleagues to value the parents' trust and take their concerns seriously. The rehabilitation of a child with developmental risks should begin immediately after birth. Trivializations like 'He is just lazy' or 'She will grow out of it' lead to an unnecessary loss of valuable time in which the child could have already benefited from therapeutic measures."– the physiotherapists and doctors at the ADELI Medical Center agree.
What exactly is promoted by early intervention?
Early intervention promotes brain development. In contrast, insufficient stimulation of the central nervous system in the first few months of life can promote the development of pathological movement patterns that are more difficult to correct later on. By delaying and postponing therapies, we risk developmental delays in both the motor and cognitive areas.
For whom is developmental diagnostics particularly recommended?
The ADELI BABY ZONE does not replace a neurological examination in a specialist practice, but offers a valuable perspective from a physiotherapeutic point of view.
