Even in the case of coma vigil intensive daily rehabilitation remains indispensable

Her favorite movie was "Three nuts for Cinderella". Today, Jessica's parents would like nothing more than to see her awaken from the condition in which Jessica is stuck... A waking coma, in which the patient is completely dependent on the help of others, is also a condition in which intensive daily rehabilitation is necessary. Young Jessica's condition is the result of a gunshot wound to the head she sustained in 2017 while performing her job as a police officer.

After a shooting at a train station near Munich, several people were injured and the shooter was on the run. Young policewoman was lying on the ground. She was hit by a bullet deep in the side of her head, just before the fleeing gunman shot her in the legs... By the time 200 police officers, a helicopter and police dogs found the shooter, rescuers were already fighting for Jessica's life. In the weeks that followed, pressure mounted in her skull and doctors prepared her parents for her departure from life. It wasn't until her father was able to say goodbye to Jessica that everything stopped. At the standstill, they noted, Jessica's condition also stopped and it did not deteriorate further. "God decided to leave her here for us," says her father Veiko.

The injuries to her skull and brain were so devastating that part of her brain had to be removed and part of her skull replaced with special material. Experiments with titanium and other combinations of materials were unsuccessful. Part of the ligament from her back was successfully implanted as a replacement surface for part of her skull. After two years of fighting for her life in the hospital, "Jessi" - as everyone calls her - was finally able to return home to her family. The Bavarian Police Foundation made it possible for the family to convert their house into a wheelchair-accessible home and financed a 24-hour service with four rotating caregivers. Jessica has since also received daily care at home from physical therapists, massage therapists and speech therapists. Three caregivers also look after Jessica during her time at ADELI.

What are the benefits of the therapies at ADELI?

Intensive training, which mainly prevents contractures, stiffness, as well as deformities of the limbs. Jessica breathes independently and takes food. She has no pressure sores or major deformities of her limbs. Her awareness is always present, she expresses her feelings and she knows her will. "When she listens, we feel she understands us and we have her attention. This is the direction in which we believe Jessica's development will continue. We don't live in a fairy tale, but sometimes we experience wishes being fulfilled even in reality." - says father Veiko.

In reality, Jessica's 'three nuts' unfold in the form of three types of help: first the support of the Police Foundation, which enables her to live a life of dignity, then active health care, a safe home with her parents under one roof, and finally daily rehabilitation with regular intensive therapies at ADELI. In addition to Jessica's family, we would also like to express our respect and gratitude to the therapists around Dominik Šnirc, masseur Alex, Magdalena - the assistant - and countless other colleagues at ADELI! It is crucial to overcome the limits and challenge the body as well as the mind with tireless effort and an irrepressible will.
