The ADELI Medical Center the first international symposium on neurology in the Slovakian spa town of Piešťany on Saturday, April 27, 2024, on the topic of "Spasticity – current options for individualized therapy." Leading international experts in neurology and neurosurgery will present new treatment methods. Participation is free of charge. Registration at: info@adelicenter.com
Vienna/Piešťany, April 2024. On Saturday, April 27, 2024, internationally renowned experts in the field of neurology and neurosurgery will be guests at ADELI Medical Center Piešťany. At the first international symposium for neurology, the specialists will discuss current options for individualized therapy for spasticity.
The symposium is aimed at doctors, the general public, and people with a family member suffering from spasticity who are faced with unfavorable prognoses for the development of those affected. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the ADELI Medical Center Hlboká 4794/45, Piešťany. Those interested can also follow the symposium online at www.adelicenter.com. Participation is free of charge.
What is spasticity?
From a medical point of view, spasticity is a pathological increase in muscle tension. The cause of spasticity is damage to the central nervous system. Tens of thousands of people in Europe suffer from this damage to the central nervous system and have to deal with the consequences of brain injuries and strokes as well as the lifelong effects of cerebral palsy.
The overactive musculature leads to permanent misalignments of movement sections and thus to movement restrictions that can be considerable - in other words, to so-called spastic paralysis. The extent to which the muscles and limbs are affected depends on the underlying disease and the individual severity of the patient's symptoms.
Successful mix of methods
The Viennese neurologist em. Prof. Dr. Heinrich Binder, former head physician and chief physician at the Neurological Center of the Otto Wagner Hospital, is one of the speakers at the Symposium for Neurology. He emphasizes the unique advantages of the interplay between interventional, conservative and innovative technological methods: "The primary goal of spasticity therapy is to reduce pathological muscle tension and prevent the occurrence of pathological movement patterns. We rely on the plasticity of the nervous system, the supportive effect of physiotherapy and the possibilities of robotics."
Exchange with experts
The thematic spectrum of the international symposium ranges from the possibilities of intramuscular Botox therapy and epidural electrical stimulation to the intrathecal administration of spasticity-relieving medication and a range of neurosurgical procedures such as selective dorsal rhizotomy. Symposium guests will have the opportunity to share their experiences on these topics and broaden their horizons.
Lectures by international luminaries
While Prof. Dr. Heinrich Binder will talk about "Conservative measures for the treatment of spasticity", Prof . Dr. Leopold Saltuari will address the topic of "The value of robotics in neurorehabilitation". Saltuari is known for his therapy methods for comatose patients: "In everyday clinical practice, the so-called upper motor neuron syndrome is decisive for therapy concepts that take into account a number of other clinical parameters, in particular the so-called 'minus factors', such as weakness or a decrease in fine motor skills." In his lecture, Saltuari will present experiences and example studies relating to the treatment strategy of patients, taking into account the respective needs, including the management of drug-resistant patients.
Prof. Memet Özek, M.D. from the Turkish hospital chain Acibadem, working in Turkey and the USA, specializes in the treatment of complicated brain diseases in children, including deep tumours of the brain stem, thalamus and hypothalamus. He will be speaking at the event about epilepsy surgery, spasticity surgery and congenital malformations such as hydrocephalus.
The Austrian neurologist Dr. BrigitteFreundl will speak at the symposium on "Epidural and transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation in spasticity" and explain the significant effects of this neuromodulation procedure to the participants.
The lecture "Spasticity - what does it mean?" by Jozef Pribula, MD, PhD, MBA includes his clinical experience with the phenomenon of spasticity. He explains how pathological muscle tension can affect patient motivation.
