Abstract
A specially developed proprioceptive correction device is proposed for the restoration of motor functions in the proximal parts of the upper extremity in central paresis syndrome during the late restorative and residual phases of stroke. The device is a logical continuation of the proprioceptive correction systems Penguin, Gravistat, which aim at restoring balance and walking in post-stroke patients. It consists of a waist coat, cuffs connected by a system of elastic bands that are fixed around the upper arm and the arm of the paretic upper extremity. The regulation of the tension of the elastic bands allows for the creation of regimens of 'facilitated' work and increased exertion during active movements in the proximal parts of a paretic arm. The effectiveness of using the proprioceptive correction suit for the restoration of conscious movements in the upper extremity was demonstrated in 23 patients in the late restorative and residual phases of stroke. As a result of the treatment, most patients showed a reliable reduction of paresis expression in the arm; the rate of recovery exceeded the indices in the control group. It is appropriate to use the proprioceptive correction suit as part of neurorehabilitation measures for the restoration of conscious movements in an arm of the post-stroke patient.
