Unbelievable though evidence-based achievements in neurological disorders are possible! Let us share with you a highly inspiring lecture by Dr. Michael H. Thaut: Introduction to the scientific evidence, foundations, and clinical techniques of Neurologic Music Therapy, NMT. NMT-based interventions for sensorimotor, speech/language, and cognitive rehabilitation were demonstrated in the lecture, as well as the role of NMT as a worldwide clinical and research network in global brain health initiatives…
At the Adeli Medical Center in Piešťany, an exceptional lecture titled "Neurologic Music Therapy – Introduction to Theory and Practice" was held at the beginning of April 2025, led by the world-renowned expert Prof. Dr. Michael H. Thaut. This renowned Canadian neuroscientist and musician is a pioneer in the field of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), which he presented as a clinically proven approach to nervous system rehabilitation using music.
Prof. Thaut emphasizes that music is the biological language of the human brain, which is firmly hardwired into our neurological system. This fact provides a strong scientific basis for its use in rehabilitation, as well as in supporting neurological development, especially in children. "When we talk about neurologic music therapy, we can rightly speak of applied music neuroscience" – he views neurorehabilitation as a practical application of neuroscience knowledge.
As part of his presentation, the professor showed brain scans, research data, and inspiring videos of patients. He pointed out that listening to music activates an extensive and interconnected network of areas in the brain. "The brain literally lights up." This synchronization is the basis of neuroplasticity – the brain's ability to change, adapt, and restore its functions, which is the goal of every effective neurorehabilitation.
Four pillars of neurologic music therapy
Professor Thaut introduces four basic mechanisms of neurologic music therapy:
1. Rhythmic training of motor skills and gait – thanks to the connection between the auditory and motor systems, movement coordination can be effectively trained through rhythm.
2. Transforming thought into movement through sound – using auditory feedback, we learn to turn ideas into actions, which is crucial for the restoration of motor functions.
3. Synchronization of brain areas – music supports the connection between different brain centers, thereby promoting regeneration.
4. Motivation – music can motivate the patient toward long-term cooperation, which is essential for successful therapy.
