International Training Institutes in Neurologic Music Therapy® are open to allied professionals, music therapists, and students who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) and utilizing NMT™ methodology and techniques within their scope of practice.
To uphold and maintain best practices of the Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) system of standardized techniques, safeguard both the consumers of NMT™ and the public at large, and to preserve and protect the integrity of NMT™ for future generations, participants will sign a license agreement with the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy® allowing one to practice the NMT™ System of Techniques and use the professional designation assigned for five years.
The Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) System of Techniques is a standardized evidence-based clinical treatment system of 20 techniques that is driven by advances in applied auditory music neuroscience and the clinical understanding of music perception, production, and cognition. The NMT™ System targets specific functional behaviors in the areas of cognition, sensorimotor, and speech and language based on a client's diagnostics and treatment goals. The NMT™ system provides structured music-based exercises that are not only relevant to NMT™ music therapists but exemplify how music can be integrated into intervention practices for all allied healthcare professionals, in disciplines such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, and speech-language pathology.
Communities served by NMT™ include, but are not limited to: acquired brain injuries, movement disorders, developmental disorders and ASD, AD, and other related dementia, and mental health. The NMT™ Techniques are implemented by therapists who have received advanced professional training through the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®.
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
Demonstrate a basic definition and introductory knowledge of Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™), including the taxonomy of techniques used in NMT™;
Demonstrate increased knowledge of current research supporting NMT™ techniques;
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Transformational Design Model (TDM)™, a model to assist in treatment selection based on functional goals;
Identify current clinical assessments that can be used by NMT™ professionals for treatment evaluation;
Answer basic neuroanatomy and pathology questions related to a variety of neurological disorders.
Upon successful completion of this course and a written test, participants will receive a certificate of completion in advanced Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) training issued by the Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy®. Completion of the NMT™ training allows board-certified music therapists to practice and use the NMT™ credential for five years.
Students: Those who complete the training during their undergraduate or graduate music therapy program, prior to board certification or completion of their training as a music therapist, will need to complete an NMT™ Clinical Practice Workshop to receive their NMT™ designation. Once the NMT™ Student completes their training as a music therapist, they can register for a Clinical Practice Workshop at a discounted rate.
This training is also open to other students and professionals outside the field of music therapy; however, completion of the NMT™ training does not permit practice beyond one’s professional licensure, training, or certification. There are no prerequisites to attend this training.

The 32-hour Institute will provide the board-certified music therapist with 38 CMTE credits that can be applied towards recertification. Your certificate of completion can be submitted as proof of your attendance and participation. Completion of this course does not ensure that the participant is currently a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Verify music therapy board certification status at www.cbmt.org
For more information about the curriculum, course objectives, and training schedule, visit http://nmtacademy.co, or contact Kimberly Albanowski at nmt@nmtacademy.co
The training is open to professionals and advanced students. It’s not for the general public but for those in related fields (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology) or final-year students in relevant programs
Note for Students:
Students who complete the training while enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate music therapy program, prior to board certification or completion of their professional training as a music therapist, will need to attend an NMT™ Clinical Practice Workshop to receive their NMT™ designation. After completing their music therapy training, NMT™ students are eligible to register for a Clinical Practice Workshop at a discounted rate.
The fee covers an electronic copy of required training materials and there are ~4 hours of pre-training work. The certificate requires full attendance and passing a final test.
After your registration, we will send you an invoice to complete your payment via bank transfer and finalize your attendance. No alternative payment methods (such as credit cards or online portals) are accepted.
Completing the training does not allow you to practice outside your existing professional license. For example, a speech-language pathologist can use the techniques within their field but cannot call themselves a music therapist.
Participants must sign a 5-year license agreement with the Academy to practice the NMT™ system and use its designation.
Full, on-time attendance on all days is mandatory to receive the certificate. Participants must also complete afinal written test within 30 daysafter the workshop.
