Lecture by Dr. M. Dunitz-Scheer, co-founder of No Tube, Graz

Join us for the lecture on 27.11.2025! Prof. Dr. med. Marguerite Dunitz-Scheer: The importance of oral nutrition for development, growth and quality of life

Challenges in alternative nutrition including tube feeding and tube weaning.

This lecture is dedicated to the fascinating complexity of an activity that we all carry out every day: eating and drinking. At first glance, it seems quite natural and "simple". But it actually fulfills far more than just our basic nutritional needs. Eating and drinking are embedded in our culture, our habits, our identity and our social interaction.

Dr. Marguerite Dunitz-Scheer: With this lecture, I would like to take a closer look at developmental eating disorders and reflect together on what they mean for us personally and for our society. The decision to insert a feeding tube, whether as a temporary or permanent solution, requires special attention to the ethical, legal, medical and social aspects involved. It can be helpful, but it can also turn into a nightmare. Tube dependency and many other developmental eating disorders are central themes of the presentation, as the quantitative and qualitative variables involved are often in conflict with each other and need to be carefully assessed and evaluated. Afterwards there will be time for your questions and a lively discussion.

What you will learn

When oral feeding is not possible, alternative nutrition, such as tube feeding, becomes vital. But beyond simply providing nutrition, eating is also a fundamental social, sensory and developmental experience.
This lecture highlights how alternative feeding can impact quality of life and how the gradual transition - tube weaning - requires a careful, multidisciplinary approach.
