The Impact of Oral Nutrition on Development, Growth and Quality of Life

Challenges in Alternative Nutrition Including Tube Feeding and Weaning

27. November 2025 | 10:30 – 12:30

This presentation will focus on the fascinating complexity of the “simple” daily activity of eating and drinking for serving our nutritional requirements. In a world, in which this „old tradition” is changing dramatically, we encounter numerous effects in our private as well as professional life.

The decision for and insertion of a feeding tube as a temporary or permanent solution requires specific attention for the involved ethical, legal, medical and social implications and can be helpful or become a nightmare. Tube dependency and many other developmentally challenging eating disorders will be the topic of the lecture as the involved quantitative as well as quantitative variables can be conflicting and need to be assessed and evaluated carefully. We will have time for your questions and a lively discussion.

We are pleased to invite you to a lecture by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Marguerite Dunitz-Scheer, a pioneer in the treatment of early childhood eating disorders and co-founder of the internationally renowned NoTube program in Graz.

What will you learn

When oral feeding isn’t possible, alternative nutrition such as tube feeding becomes vital for survival. Yet beyond meeting nutritional needs, feeding is also a fundamental social, sensory, and developmental experience.  This lecture explores how alternative nutrition can impact a person’s quality of life and how the gradual transition—tube weaning—requires a careful, multidisciplinary approach.
