Traffic accidents and sports injuries are often accompanied by devastating head and spinal cord injuries. When the brain and spinal cord are deprived of oxygen for even a short period of time, nerve cells die, which can directly affect subsequent brain function. The central nervous system reports failures due to loss of motor function in the extremities and muscles in the mouth and face. The prognosis depends on the extent of damage to the central nervous system (CNS) and the ability to restore CNS function (neurorehabilitation).
We know that although brain cells are unable to regenerate, new neural connections can be made through exercises and stimuli that promote neural activity. Brain neuroplasticity is promoted during CNS rehabilitation.
In the short video we shot at ADELI, we see a former professional soldier, active sportsman and diver who suffered a serious injury ten years ago in a traffic accident through no fault of his own. Thanks to his stamina, physical fitness and willpower, he is able to improve his condition as much as possible. He completes intensive exercises in the ADELI during three-week stays once a year. In a dynamic orthosis (ADELI suit), he strengthens his physical side during the 2-hour physiotherapy blocks with 3 physiotherapists. In the clinical speech therapy sessions, Fritz practises and strengthens the skills of swallowing food without problems, breathing more calmly and concentrating on speech. The rehabilitation intervention is supported by other therapies, the most important of which is therapy in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber. In total, Fritz completes around 35 therapeutic sessions per week at ADELI Medical Center in Piestany, Slovakia. Like other patients, Fritz is accompanied at ADELI by those close to him, either his mother, carers and/or his former swimming coach, all of whom are now almost members of the family.
Rehabilitation measures of this intensity are necessary for immobilized people to prevent the muscle system from sinking and the central nervous system from degenerating. Daily rehabilitation not only slowly and gradually restores the ability to move, but also compensates for the spontaneous movement that comes naturally to healthy people in everyday life and is trained unconsciously.
