MUDr. Oríšek, a pediatric neurologist from the ADELI Medical Center, was invited as a guest on the DAMSKY KLUB program on Slovak television. He explained how neurological disorders can affect a child's brain, spinal cord or nerves, that they can be present at birth or even develop during pregnancy.
He emphasized that the brain development of the unborn child is influenced by various factors, such as genetic diseases in the family, harmful external influences such as radiation, chemicals or infections, etc.
Even if a pregnancy is classified as high-risk, this does not automatically mean that the child's brain will be damaged. However, it is important to monitor the child closely in such cases.
Dr. Oríšek pointed out that complications during childbirth can also cause neurological disorders. The risk factors include:
Lack of oxygen during birth,
a premature birth - because the child's brain is not yet fully developed,
a low Apgar score or the need for artificial respiration,
as well as an increased bilirubin level (jaundice), which can damage the brain if left untreated.
Dangers can also occur after birth. Infections or injuries in early childhood can affect the brain.
There are also children who suffer from metabolic disorders. These manifest themselves, for example, in problems with sleeping, eating or conspicuous behavior.
Dr. Oríšek described typical signs:
Movement disorders such as cerebral palsy,
Muscle tone disorders: Some children are too stiff (hypertonus), too limp (hypotonus) or show both alternately,
unusual or repetitive movements,
and complex developmental disorders - for example in combination with visual, hearing or organ problems.
According to Dr. Oríšek, early diagnosis is crucial. The earlier a problem is detected, the greater the chances of improvement.
During the neurological examination, the specialist observes the patient:
movements, muscle tension (tone), reflexes and the child's behavior.
Modern diagnostic methods are also used - such as MRI, EEG or genetic tests.
The therapy depends on the type and severity of the disorder. Options include physiotherapy or special neurorehabilitation. The development of an affected child depends on the severity of the neurological disorder, the time at which treatment begins and the support provided by parents and specialist staff.
Not all neurological disorders can be prevented. But with good care during pregnancy and early diagnosis, many problems can be prevented or their effects significantly mitigated through intensive therapy. More information: www.adelicenter.com
